"Thankyou. No one has ever explained it to me like that before."
For years as an NHS GP, those were the most rewarding words I could hear
I realised early in my career that my most important work wasn't writing prescriptions. It was helping people navigate complex, multifaceted, long-term conditions like Fibromyalgia and ADHD—illnesses that can't simply be cured by a pill.
But I also noticed a frustrating truth: the modern primary care system is set up exactly the wrong way around.
We were forcing experienced GPs to run back-to-back, 10-minute appointments at breakneck speed. We were incredibly busy doing the things that mattered least—like checking over a child's mild runny nose "just in case"—while the patients who truly needed deep clinical expertise, time, and education were being rushed through the door.

The Tug-of-War in the Consulting Room
The patients who made the most significant progress with their chronic conditions weren't the ones on the highest doses of medication. They were the ones who finally understood why their bodies were reacting this way, allowing them to take true ownership of their health. I watched patients on heavy pain relief gradually reduce or completely stop their medication simply because someone finally took the time to explain the science of their pain.
But doing this came at a cost. Every time I gave a patient the time they deserved, my clinics ran later and later.
Eventually, my days became a constant emotional tug-of-war. I was torn between being an effective doctor and running hours late, or short-changing my patients by cutting the conversation short to stick to the clock. I knew I couldn't keep operating within a system that forced me to choose between efficiency and empathy.

A New Approach: The Science of Lifestyle Medicine
After attempting to modernise my practice's structure to focus more on these long-term solutions, I faced deep resistance from traditional models and ultimately chose to step away.
It was during this transition that I discovered Lifestyle Medicine and enrolled in the BSLM diploma. Suddenly, everything clicked. I was surrounded by clinicians who agreed with what the data had been saying all along: the scientific evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of education and structured lifestyle change over high-tech interventions for chronic health.
Unfortunately, the modern medical world is heavily incentivised by the pharmaceutical industry to look for solutions in expensive drug development. We are using high-tech medicines to treat problems that respond far better to simple lifestyle design and high-quality education.
That is why I founded Homeostasis Health.
